Robotic-Assisted Colorectal Surgery

Minimally invasive colorectal surgery at Enloe Medical Center has had more than an 80% success of avoiding large abdominal incisions the last eight years. We utilize this technique with all the complex conditions we treat:

  • colon cancer
  • rectal cancer
  • diverticulitis
  • rectal prolapse
  • inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's and ulcerative colitis)

The Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery

Many times, patients with previous abdominal surgery with large incisions are able to have subsequent surgeries with minimally invasive techniques. These respective cases have allowed us to understand — on a more acute level — the benefits of this less-painful technique that often has fewer complications.

The natural progression of this success is the addition of the da Vinci robotic surgery platform. Learn more about this approach in our video.

Facebook discussion on colorectal cancer

Robotic-assisted surgery matches the skill of the minimally invasive colorectal surgeon with improved optics and 3D vision, advanced image enhancement for perfusion and anatomy, and more dexterous instruments that allow the surgeon's hands to practically operate at the end of long, thin motorized instruments deep inside a patient's abdomen.

The improved options for patients include suturing inside the abdomen, options for alternative abdominal wall incisions, assessment of bowel wall perfusion, more precise work in limited spaces and better visualization of anatomy with protection of vital structure, including pelvic nerves.

Colorectal surgeries performed with robotic surgical technology at Enloe Medical Center include:

  • Colon resection for cancer
  • Colon cancer resection at the time of liver metastasis ablation or resection
  • Rectal resection for cancer- sphincter sparing (avoid a colostomy)
  • Rectal resection for cancer, abdominoperineal resection
  • Diverting colostomy or ileostomy
  • Rectal prolapse surgery
  • Combined pelvic organ/pelvic floor reconstruction with urogynecology
  • Parastomal hernia repair
  • Resections for complications of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's or ulcerative colitis)
  • Restorative proctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis (ileoanal pouch)
  • Restorative proctocolectomy for familial adenomatous polyposis syndrome

Colorectal surgery has been a specialty at Enloe Medical Center for over 37 years. The tradition of surgical excellence continues in the only second-generation colorectal surgery practice north of Sacramento. The colorectal minimally invasive surgery model and team members were the basis of the robotic surgery team that currently staffs our Robotic Surgical Services.

The goal of our colorectal minimally invasive surgery team is to provide excellent surgical outcomes with less pain and discomfort and quicker recovery for a faster return to normal function, while focusing on the patient as a whole human-being.

Is Robotic-Assisted Surgery for You?

Choosing minimally invasive surgery over conventional, open surgery, and choosing laparoscopic surgery versus robotic-assisted surgery is a complex decision that is made with your surgeon. An hour-long appointment to discuss your indication for surgery and the technique that best fits your unique situation is required to decide if robotic colon surgery is best for you. We look forward to meeting you.
