Enloe Concussion Clinic

What is a Concussion?

The American Academy of Neurology defines a concussion as a trauma-induced change in mental status that may — or may not — involve loss of consciousness.

The Symptoms

football playerIf you have suffered a concussion, you may experience:

  • Headache
  • Drowsiness, fatigue or lethargy
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Balance issues or dizziness
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Blurry or double vision
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Memory issues
  • Nervousness or irritability
  • Sadness or depression

You may also sleep longer than usual or have trouble falling asleep. Please note that symptoms may be delayed several hours or days after an injury.

Our Services

While most concussions resolve on their own, some require additional attention, and you may be referred to the Enloe Concussion Clinic. These caregivers see patients by appointment only.

Our team sees patients who have experienced a traumatic brain injury four to six weeks prior and have persisting symptoms.

We take a multidisciplinary approach for the best outcomes. You may see:

  • Doctors and nurse practitioners who will ensure a proper diagnosis
  • Physical therapists who provide balance training and vestibular rehabilitation
  • Speech therapists who provide cognitive evaluations
  • Credentialed ImPACT consultants

Caregivers will provide you with education on sleep, hygiene, managing headaches (if needed) and how to know when you’re ready to return to your normal activities.

Short-term pharmacology therapy will also be coordinated with your primary care physician if necessary.

Recovery & Referrals

Treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s needs, and those who need follow-up care will be referred accordingly.

To ensure you recover completely, please follow your care team’s instructions.

Rest is particularly important. Avoid physical activity for 24 to 48 hours after an injury, and reduce activities such as learning, reading, making decisions, and doing things that require mental focus or cause the brain to be overstimulated.

An injured brain needs time to recover to avoid further damage. That is why you should not return to your usual activities until you are free of symptoms and have been cleared by your care team.

ImPACT Certified

This stands for Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing. This is an FDA-approved tool that will be used, along with other forms of assessment and evaluations, to help determine treatment plans, including when it is safe to return to learn, work, and/or play.
