About Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the insertion of thin, sterile needles into your body for the treatment of various health problems. The needles may be placed on your:

  • Arms
  • Ears
  • Head
  • And legs

They’ll remain in place for 15-45 minutes.

How effective is acupuncture?
Studies have found acupuncture to be very effective. It usually helps you feel better by stimulating your immune system and releasing endorphins in the brain. However, acupuncture does not take the place of medical treatments.

What training do acupuncturists have?
In California, acupuncturists must be graduates from an accredited Traditional Chinese Medical School. After receiving their degree, all students must take a state exam. Once they receive their license, acupuncturists may treat patients. To keep their license current, they must take continuing education classes.

What to Expect

When do treatments take place?
Treatments take place Wednesdays from 4-7 p.m. at the Enloe Infusion Therapy Clinic inside the Enloe Regional Cancer Center, in a group setting.

Is treatment painful?
Most people have very little pain when the needles are inserted. Some say it feels like a mosquito bite. While the needles are in, you may feel heaviness, tingling or an electric sensation. The acupuncturist will be with you throughout your treatment. If you have any discomfort, let the caregiver know.

How many treatments will I need?
Some people experience symptom relief after a single treatment. Others need a few treatments for optimal results, as is the case with many other therapies.
