A Note for Patients with Anthem Blue Cross Medi-Cal Managed Care Insurance

Enloe Medical Center’s contract with Anthem Blue Cross for Managed Medi-Cal plans ended on Oct. 31, 2020. This does not impact commercial insurance plans through Anthem Blue Cross.

Emergency department services will still be covered for all patients under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA). Enloe will also complete treatments that have prior authorization by the plan.

If you have questions related to insurance and billing, please contact Anthem Blue Cross directly by calling the number on your insurance card.

Standard Charges & Rates

Many factors impact how hospitals establish their charges, including the cost of living in the area, where the hospital is located, and the overall scope of services provided. While the hospital’s list of charges is the same for all patients receiving the same service, every patient’s health circumstances are unique, requiring different levels of care that result in varying bill amounts. The Charge Master does not include the costs from health care providers who may bill you separately from the hospital, such as your personal doctors, surgeons, anesthesiologists, etc.

Most hospitals use the charge master as a starting point for negotiations between health insurance plans and the hospital to determine hospital reimbursement rates. Due to the complexity of billing regulations and the reimbursement system for health care, the charge master is not effective for use in determining what a patient's out-of-pocket cost expenses will actually be. Please contact our financial counselors for specific patient plan information. They are happy to help you understand your potential out-of-pocket expenses. You can reach these caregivers at (530) 332-6350.

Contractual prices are the difference between the charges the hospital submits to insurance and the reimbursement determined by contracts between the various insurance companies, Medicare, and/or Medicaid for services. As a result, we strongly recommend contacting your insurance provider to get a better estimation of your specific out-of-pocket costs considering your deductible and co-pay information.

Pharmaceutical and Biological pricing is an estimation based on continuously changing current market prices so unlike service and supply costs expenses which change typically once a year, pharmacy prices can change much more frequently. Pharmaceutical care is dose and disease state specific and drug therapy is very patient specific. Prices are highly variable due to drug shortages and changes in average wholesale price. Drug prices have historically been increasing. These prices do not guarantee the availability or insurance coverage for a particular medication. Prices do not include professional fees, cost to mix and administer drugs which make comparison shopping dramatically different from retail pharmacy.
