Delivering More Choices

Women now have more options when it comes to their care. That’s because Enloe Medical Center is now offering a wider spectrum of women’s services, which includes expansion of its midwifery program.

“It’s been a real collaboration to make this happen, and it’s a win-win for everyone,” said Mark Schwabe, M.D., medical director for Enloe Women’s Services. “We’ve needed more options for prenatal care and delivery, as well as well-woman care. This expansion is a boon to our existing women’s services, which have been significantly impacted in terms of volume after the Camp Fire.”

Enloe’s three Women’s Services clinics, which include nine physicians, recently added four certified nurse-midwives (CNM) — bringing its total number of midwives to six. Its midwifery services will now also include hospital deliveries. CNMs work collaboratively with supervising obstetrician/gynecologists on Enloe’s medical staff and at Enloe’s Women’s Services clinics, where they also provide gynecological care, preventive care, and prenatal care for women of all ages.

More Options for More Patients

Initially after the Camp Fire, hospital deliveries and births at Enloe increased dramatically. Currently, the average delivery volume per month is 13% higher than it was before the fire, said Sandra Bernstein, RN, director of Enloe’s Mother & Baby Care Center.

“Our physicians have been superheroes keeping up, but it’s not sustainable,” she said. “Expanding our midwifery services provides more choices and access to care in our community. We’re thrilled to have this partnership again in the hospital.”

The medical center will continue to actively recruit OB/GYNs and midwives to bolster its women’s services offerings in the coming year.

“There’s an eagerness and excitement from health care professionals and the community to see the expansion of services,” said Holly Kralj, an Enloe CNM and women’s health nurse practitioner. “This new collaboration between caregivers brings experience and compassion, which will bring a lot of joy for women.”

Proven, Comprehensive Care

Certified nurse-midwives are registered nurses with advanced degrees and training in women’s health, including pregnancy and delivery for low-risk, healthy women. They are certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives and are supervised by OB/GYN physicians. Safety of mother and baby is the No. 1 priority, and a supervising OB/GYN is only steps away if required.

“We’ve been working with our physicians for the last several years to create a program that accommodates the needs of women in our community for pre-natal care and delivery,” said Brady Haynes, Enloe’s vice president of Physician Enterprise. “Offering a strong team of certified nurse-midwives working collaboratively with physicians provides women with more options for comprehensive and personalized care.”

Caregivers at Enloe Women’s Services provide care for women in all phases of life – from adolescent and routine gynecological care to pregnancy and menopause. In addition to prenatal care and childbirth, physicians and nurse-midwives offer:
