Caregivers talk colorectal cancer - Providers discuss symptoms, prevention, more

03.15.2021

CHICO, Calif., March 15, 2021 — Not including skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third-most common cancer diagnosed in men and women, and the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and in women. This year, more than 100,000 new cases are expected to be diagnosed in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society. But this cancer is beatable — especially if caught early.

To spread the word, Enloe Medical Center will discuss the condition on Facebook on March 25 at noon. Colorectal surgeon Michael Fealk, D.O., and gastroenterologist Fong-Kuei Cheng, M.D., will go over the signs of colorectal cancer, screening guidelines, the impact the pandemic has had on checkups and more in honor of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

“This cancer really is preventable, treatable and beatable,” Dr. Fealk said. “Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t realize how common it is or think it only affects older adults. But that’s not the case. Colorectal cancer is appearing more and more in younger adult, so it’s important to know the signs and risk factors and talk to your provider. It could literally save your life or the life of someone you love.”

The duo will also discuss screening options, explain what those entail and share lifestyle changes people can make to lower their risk of this common cancer. To watch the broadcast, visit Enloe’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/enloe.medical and tune in on March 25 at noon. Viewers can post their questions in the broadcast’s Comments field. Once the discussion concludes, a recording will be available on the medical center’s Facebook page in the “Videos” section and on Enloe’s YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/user/EnloeMedicalCtr.

Please note that some of Enloe’s Facebook discussions are recorded and broadcast on Facebook at a later date for quality assurance purposes. Comments and questions are addressed in real time during the broadcast.
