Caregiver offers tips for coping with the Camp Fire anniversary - Facebook discussion to provide valuable insight

10.21.2019

CHICO, Calif., Oct. 21, 2019 — With the anniversary of the Camp Fire approaching, people may have feelings of sadness, anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder. This is normal, according to psychiatrist Scott Nichols, M.D., the medical director of Enloe Behavioral Health. He will talk about this topic on Facebook on Oct. 24 at noon.

Nichols will explain why these feelings surface, who they can affect, how folks can prepare for the anniversary and more. He’ll also explore PTSD, a condition more North State residents are experiencing since the fire — and one that can affect people who were and weren’t affected by the fire directly. He’ll go over the signs of the condition, how these feelings can manifest in children and how the fire may have affected them.

“We may think kids were affected by flames or the loss of their homes,” he said. “But those are adult concerns. Children have much more immediate worries that usually can be corrected if we know what they are.”

Viewers will also learn about available resources and how to know if they or a loved one needs more support. He encourages folks to tune in and reminds them that healing is a  process that is different for everyone. “The important thing is to figure out what will help you during this time,” he said. “And remember that what might work for someone else might not work for you.”

To watch the discussion, visit Enloe’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/enloe.medical and tune in on Oct. 24 at noon. Viewers can post their questions in the broadcast’s Comments field. Once the discussion concludes, a recording will be available on the medical center’s Facebook page in the “Videos” section and on Enloe’s YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/user/EnloeMedicalCtr.

Please note that some of Enloe’s Facebook discussions are recorded and broadcast on Facebook at a later date for quality assurance purposes. Comments and questions are addressed in real time during the broadcast.
