Exercise for a Healthier You: Create a Fitness Plan

Exercise is essential for maintaining your health. It can also improve your overall sense of well-being. Even low-to-moderate intensity activities, for as little as 30 minutes a day, can be beneficial.

Ways to Help Design the Right Exercise Program

  • Determine your own physical activity level. Talk with your doctor if you're just starting out. We are all in different places, so start with what YOU are able to do and increase your activity slowly as you gain strength and confidence.
  • Choose activities that are fun. The best way to stay motivated is to do something you enjoy and look forward to.
  • Find a buddy. Exercising together is not only more fun, but will also help keep you motivated.

Activities to Help Get You Started

Just 30 minutes a day of low to moderate activity can help improve your health in many ways. Here are some ideas of activities to help get you started:

  • Pleasure walking. Explore the many parks in our area or just take a stroll around your neighborhood.
  • Climbing stairs. If you live in a two-story home, you're already set, just spend a few minutes climbing up and down the stairs.
  • Gardening & Yard Work. Getting outside can help improve your mood, plus it counts as exercise! And the bonus is, you'll have a beautiful yard to enjoy!
  • Moderate-to-heavy Housework. Having a clean house and your exercise done all at once is bound to make you feel good.

Regular Aerobic Activity

More vigorous aerobic activities are best for improving the fitness of your heart and lungs. These are done 3 or 4 times a week for 30 to 60 minutes. Regular, aerobic activity increases your capacity for exercise and it helps prevent cardiovascular diseases and even certain cancers. Aerobic exercise may also help to lower blood pressure.

Aerobic activities may include:

Brisk walking | Running | Swimming | Playing tennis | Cycling | Roller skating | Jumping rope
