Lactation Consultations

A woman breastfeeds her baby as a lactation consultant helps her

A lactation consultation can be very helpful to you and your baby.

Enloe Health’s lactation consultants are trained specialists who can assist you during pregnancy, right after birth and throughout your breastfeeding journey.

All of these caregivers are nurses and International Board Certified Lactation Consultants. They can help you overcome feeding difficulties, support you as you navigate challenging feelings and more.

What to Expect

Bring your baby hungry! During your 1-hour appointment, our lactation consultant will:

  • Observe you feeding your infant, offering assistance and support if needed
  • Help you create a personalized feeding plan, if needed
  • Size you for breast flanges and help you use a breast pump, if desired
  • Weigh your baby before and after the feeding to find out how much he or she is eating
  • Screen you for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) and, if needed, refer you to a mental health care provider
  • Answer your questions about feeding your baby, increasing your milk supply, maintaining your milk supply as you return to work, bottle feeding and more

When to Get a Consultation

We recommend getting a lactation consultation if:

  • You just want to make sure everything is going well.
  • You’re having difficulty with positioning or latching.
  • Your nipples are sore.
  • Your milk supply hasn’t increased by day four.
  • You don’t hear swallowing when your baby feeds at the breast.
  • Your newborn isn’t feeding at least 8-12 times in a 24-hour period.
  • You’re concerned about your baby’s urine or stool.
  • Your baby is slow to gain weight.
  • Your baby is sleeping on the breast, isn’t suckling well and seems hungry each time you take him or her off the breast.
  • You left the hospital with an alternative feeding method — like cup feeding, a supplemental nursing system (SNS), finger feeding, or bottle feeding — or a nipple shield.
  • Your baby was premature or in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
  • You have twins or higher-level multiples.
  • You have had breast surgery.
  • You would like to get breastfeeding information before having your baby.
  • You would like advice about how to maintain your milk supply and continue breastfeeding as you go back to work.
