Radiation Therapy

Radiation oncologists at the Enloe Regional Cancer Center diagnose, treat, and manage common — and rare — tumors. They administer cancer treatments and work alongside caregivers in Enloe’s Radiation Oncology department. If you’re in need of care, you’re in good hands.

Pioneering Technology

The future of cancer care has arrived, and Enloe is proud to lead the way. The Enloe Regional Cancer Center is the first in the North State to treat patients using the MRIdian Linear Accelerator — the most advanced tool in radiation oncology treatment.

The tool combines MRI, the best type of medical imaging available, with a linear accelerator, the tool used to deliver radiation therapy to the body. Radiation therapy uses radiation to destroy cancer cells and shrink tumors.

Enloe is only the third medical facility in California to offer this pioneering technology to cancer patients. Fewer than 20 MRIdian Linear Accelerators are in use in the United States.

What does this mean for you? Greater precision, fewer side effects, shorter treatments and more time with your loved ones.

MRI technology provides real-time imaging that lets your care team see the boundary between a tumor and healthy tissue.

Why is this important? Movement during treatment — such as breathing, swallowing or digesting food — can cause your organs to move. As a result, it affects the position of your tumor.

The detailed imaging provided allows your care team to see subtle changes inside your body from day to day. Using this info, caregivers can adjust your treatment plan daily to safely maximize your radiation therapy.

This unmatched precision allows a larger dose of radiation to be delivered daily. It also helps prevent the damage of healthy tissue and reduces side effects.

The MRIdian’s powerful beam also has a safeguard built in. If, during treatment, the tumor moves beyond the boundary, it automatically pauses. It will not resume delivering radiation until the tumor is back in the predefined area.

Plus, you can see a video monitor, so you can participate in the targeting of your tumor during radiation.

While the MRIdian can make sessions longer, it can shorten the overall length of treatment. For some patients, that could mean completing radiation in days instead of weeks.

The MRIdian Linear Accelerator brings an added sense of hope, especially for cancer patients who previously couldn’t receive radiation. It complements the other advanced cancer-fighting tools in use at the Enloe Regional Cancer Center.

Caregivers use the MRIdian to treat an array of cancers, including:

  • Liver cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • And more

Your care team will discuss your cancer with you and the best approach for your situation.

We also offer other leading cancer-fighting techniques, including:

  • Partial Breast Radiation Therapy. This treatment targets radiation to only the tumor site and can reduce the side effects of radiation when compared to whole breast radiation.
  • Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). These short, high-dosage treatments use digital imaging to target your radiation.
  • Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). Our linear accelerators offer this precise treatment to target and destroy cancerous tumors while minimizing damage to healthy tissue.
  • Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), RapidArc® radiotherapy technology and Gated RapidArc. These treatments offer greater precision.
