Quality Initiatives

At Enloe Medical Center, we strive for great, quality care. We continually look for ways to incorporate technology and innovate to improve our services.

Additionally, by reaching out to patients and their families, we're able to create programs that are meaningful and applicable to preventive care. Our focus on continual quality improvements helps us achieve excellence every day.

Preventing Infection with Short Wavelength UV Light: Among the current quality initiatives, Enloe is implementing a technology that harnesses short wavelength ultraviolet (UV) light to clean rooms that have been occupied by patients with certain infections, such as the intestinal organism Clostridium difficile (C. diff). Patients come to hospitals with a multitude of conditions, some of which are infections caused by particularly hardy organisms that may persist on surfaces after standard cleaning. With this new technology, the incidence of hospital-acquired C. diff infections was reduced by as much as 52%. Also, thanks to the introduction of UV light technology, during the post-Camp Fire norovirus outbreak, Enloe was able to guard against the spread of this highly infectious gastrointestinal illness.

Our Quality Summit

Every year, Enloe holds a Quality Summit. It brings employees and physicians together to review current quality initiatives, report progress, celebrate achievements, and set new goals.

The Quality Summit is a unique event in the health care field, and it was ranked favorably by a leading consumer magazine, which included Enloe in a review of hospital safety ratings.

Leading up to the Quality Summit, staff throughout the medical center create posters illustrating their quality projects. We select one quality improvement project from the prior year to receive the Quality Summit Award. Then we look for the best evidence-based ideas that can make a difference in patient care and pursue those as quality initiatives.

Quality Summit Annual Report

Enloe’s Quality Summit Annual Report provides an update on the quality initiatives identified in the year prior, summarizes new projects, identifies the Quality Summit Award recipient and announces the newest quality initiatives.

Enloe's 2018-2020 Quality Initiatives

Enloe will address these newly chosen quality initiatives while continuing to follow those set in past years.

Safer Opioid Use: Opioid pain medications have a place in medical therapeutics, but their ongoing use carries significant risk to patient safety. In Butte County, the need to address the opioid epidemic is particularly urgent. Residents receive twice as many opioid prescriptions compared to the rest of California, and the amount of opioids prescribed in Butte County is three times the average amount prescribed per person in the United States. In collaboration with community providers and Butte County Public Health, Enloe will implement actions recommended by the Butte County Opioid Coalition to reduce the impact of opioids on our patients.

Improving Diabetes Care: Diabetic Ketoacidosis: People with Type 1 diabetes are at significant risk for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). This results from very high blood sugars and requires aggressive inpatient treatment. This quality improvement project will use the latest research to ensure patients receive DKA care in the setting most appropriate for them and will also focus on empowering patients to remain healthy after discharge.

Enloe Concussion Clinic: Closed head injuries can cause a serious condition known as concussion. A concussion may have long-term consequences but that impact may not immediately show up. Because of this, it is that much more important to closely follow patients after they suffer this kind of injury. When developed, the Enloe Concussion Clinic will provide continuity of care to those who have experienced a concussion, with expert evaluation and monitoring.
