Construction Progress
July updates
This monthly newsletter is part of Enloe Medical Center’s commitment to keep neighbors informed about significant construction activity for our expansion project. Updates for the month include:
Roofing, multi-layered exterior wall system work in progress – The patient tower has several roofs – a main roof, bell tower roof, canopy roofs and mansard roofs – and activity on several of them will be busy again this month. Clay tiles are being set on the two west canopies. When the patient tower opens it will have four canopies, which shelter patient drop-offs and pick-ups at the building’s entrances. The tower’s main roof was recently painted with a red rust-proofing paint, giving a sneak peek of the roof’s finished color, as it matches the metal tile roof that will be placed later. Crews are also beginning to build a multi-layered exterior insulation and finish system on all exterior walls of the building. This system, known as EFIS (pronounced “ee-fis”) or commercial stucco, is comprised of seven layers, including a layer of gold-colored DensGlass to act as a weather-resistant sheathing panel and blue mesh layer to help prevent cracking. In other work, framing of the bell tower will continue in July and finish up in August; and mechanical, electrical and plumbing as well as interior framing continue as ongoing projects. The first phase of fireproofing of the building is now complete. Fireproofing will continue after the main and canopy roofs are finished later this summer.
You are cordially invited – The Enloe Medical Center Board of Trustees invites you to join us at a reception to welcome the new Enloe Chief Executive Officer, Mike Wiltermood. The reception takes place on July 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Enloe Conference Center, 1528 Esplanade. Light refreshments will be served. Mike Wiltermood’s first day as permanent CEO was July 1. He served as the medical center’s interim CEO since March, and was Enloe’s Chief Operating Officer since July 2007. The Enloe Board of Trustees, which made the appointment, said that employees, physicians and volunteers communicated overwhelming support for Mike.
Seismic and lab/radiology upgrades underway in existing hospital building – The medical center is beginning a new multiphase project to prepare for the state of California’s seismic law, which requires hospitals to rebuild or retrofit their facilities to meet the strict seismic standards by 2013. The new tower is already being constructed to meet the forthcoming stringent seismic requirements, and the four-story patient tower built in 1980 currently meets these requirements. Many patient care services now housed in the original 1937 hospital building and in additions built before 1979 will be relocated to the new building. In addition to the seismic upgrade of outside walls, our new multiphase project will update the hospital's Laboratory and Radiology department, located on the first floor of hospital building constructed in 1967. The updates will include a new blood draw room expected to open this summer, renovations to allow for a new Open Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Open MRI) system and the replacement of Enloe’s two X-ray rooms, one of which will be fully digital. We will keep you updated on these exciting projects, which are expected to be completed within a year.
In other renovations, Cardiac Catheterization Lab undergoes updates – In June, Enloe Medical Center completed the Cardiac Catheterization Lab project on the first floor while still continuing full service to cardiac catheterization patients. One of the two catheterization rooms was remodeled and equipped with a new machine that touts the latest technology for both cardiac and vascular imaging. Improvements include updated software tools that help reduce procedure time and improve accuracy and outcomes. The room’s cosmetic upgrades include new flooring and ceiling, fresh paint and new cabinets in the control room. The new cardiac catheterization room gives a welcoming feeling to those who enter.
While we do our best to project dates, they are subject to change due to factors including weather and permits.
