CHICO, Calif., Jan. 5, 2017 – On the heels of multiple awards and recognition for quality, safety and patient satisfaction from third party health care rating systems, Enloe Medical Center submitted an application for gold-level designation for Excellence in Patient-Centered Care with the Planetree organization.
Enloe officials submitted the 700-page application on Oct. 28. Planetree is an international organization dedicated to raising the bar for standards of patient care in hospitals and health care organizations around the world.
In 2013, Enloe Medical Center received the Planetree Bronze Recognition for meaningful progress in patient-centered care. Enloe was the first health care organization in California to be awarded bronze-level recognition since Planetree introduced the recognition level in 2012.
The submission for gold-level designation is the result of nearly two years of work and preparation, including the hospital's decision to leap over the silver recognition and instead go for the gold designation. This decision was something that Connie Rowe, RN, vice president of Patient Care Services, took to heart.
"Enloe Medical Center has undergone a complete transformation and our success has been built around the core of our culture and mission: to improve lives through patient-centered care," Rowe said. "We recognized that we weren't far away from meeting the criteria, so we went ahead with our direct pursuit of gold."
Planetree provides health care organizations a pathway to change, a structured methodology for humanizing, personalizing and demystifying the patient experience, customized to each organization's culture and needs. Powered by stories and insights from patients, family members and health care professionals, the Planetree approach provides guidance in making patient-centered care the centerpiece of a cohesive strategy accelerating quality improvements and positioning the organization to create lasting change.
Next steps for Enloe Medical Center will be a site visit from Planetree, followed by any further enhancements or improvements necessary prior to receiving gold-level designation. During the site visit, Planetree officials will measure progress in the following ways:
- Observation of services
- Facility walk-through
- Focus groups with patients and families
- Focus groups with staff and leadership (including members of the board)
- Meeting with Patient and Family Advisory Council
- Random patient and staff interviews
- A review of outcomes measurement data
- Meeting with the patient-centered implementation team
“From the very beginning, we’ve been focused on enhancing the patient experience and delivering the highest quality of care,” says Dr. Marcia Nelson, vice president of Medical Affairs for Enloe Medical Center. “There are only 67 health care organizations in the world that hold Planetree gold-level designation, and Enloe is on its way to becoming one of them. This is quite an accomplishment for an independent hospital in a rural area and shows our patients the expectations we hold ourselves to when it comes to their care.”
At the 2016 International Planetree conference in Chicago, Enloe Medical Center was one of 10 hospitals worldwide to receive the Patient-Centered Excellence and Innovation Award, which was awarded for its Bariatrics Services program. Additionally, Enloe Behavioral Health, which made significant program and environmental changes this past year, was invited to lead a conference breakout session to provide inspiration for other Planetree hospitals.
