Enloe offers infant car seat, pet safety class

03.23.2016

CHICO, Calif., March 23, 2016 –Enloe’s Mother & Baby Education Center introduces two important infant safety topics in one new class: Infant Car Seat & Pet Safety. The information can help new parents avoid preventable accidents, the No. 1 cause of death in children under the age of five.

The class is part of a selection of pregnancy, parenting and safety classes offered through Enloe’s Mother & Baby Education Center. Infant Car Seat & Pet Safety was created in partnership with the California Highway Patrol and Butte Humane Society.

“These new partnerships provide additional information to keep newborns safe,” says Heidi Cantrell, R.N., Enloe’s Perinatal Outreach Coordinator. “These issues are important safety concerns for parents, and we’re happy to help them navigate the many new responsibilities of parenthood.”

Car Seat Installation: Getting it Right. Choosing the correct car seat and installing it properly are not easy tasks. In fact, nearly three out of four car seats are installed incorrectly, according to Safe Kids Worldwide. That’s important since car crashes are the No. 1 cause of death among children. What’s more, correctly used child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by 71 percent. In a partnership with the California Highway Patrol, Enloe will provide infant car seat safety information in the class. It will teach new and expectant parents, and others who transport infants, how to best install a car seat, and it will provide awareness of the dangers of attaching products such as infant support inserts, head rests, toys and mirrors.

Preparing Pets for Baby’s Arrival. Millions of people, most of them children, are bitten by dogs each year, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than half of all dog-bite injuries occur at home with dogs that are familiar to family members. The majority, if not all, are preventable. The pet safety portion of this safety class will include information from the Butte Humane Society about introducing new babies to family pets, creating safe spaces and safety tips for after the baby arrives.

The no-cost classes take place at Enloe’s Mother & Baby Education Center from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Dates scheduled for this year are:

Thursday, April 14 , 2016 |   Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016   |    Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016
