2017 Community Events: October

Thursday, October 19 | Pre-Diabetes Class

6 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Check-in begins at 5:30 p.m.  |  Enloe Outpatient Center, 888 Lakeside Village Commons, Bldg. C, Classroom A, Chico

The number of adults with type 2 diabetes continues to climb with nearly 10 percent of Butte County adults now living with this chronic condition. This two-hour class is designed for all adults, whether you have pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, diabetes risk factors or you are simply interested in healthier living. Learn from our health care professionals how to take charge of your health and lower your risk for diabetes with diet and exercise. We'll also discuss goal setting and available resources, as well as what your numbers really mean. 

Pre-registration is requested, $10 per person. Register online today to save your space.

Saturday, October 21 | Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Join Enloe's Warriors of Hope team during Breast Cancer Awareness Month as we walk to support the American Cancer Society's efforts to save lives and stop breast cancer. Register or join a team at makingstrides.acsevents.org.

2017 Community Events: November

Saturday, November 4 | Community Wellness Expo (with a Free Walk-In Flu Vaccination Clinic)

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Enloe Medical Center, corner of W. 5th and Magnolia avenues

Enloe's annual Community Wellness Expo is back this year with free flu shots for the whole family*, plus health screenings, cooking demonstrations and a drug take-back station where you can bring all of your unwanted medications for safe disposal.**

The Kids' Activity Zone will return, too, as well as several of our community partners, including CalFresh Outreach, California Health Care Options, Donor Network West and Passages. New this year, representatives from the Alzheimer's Association, Ampla Health, Butte County's Tobacco Education Program and CARD will be on hand, sharing information about their programs and local resources.

Enloe's Bariatric Program returns this year with the popular metabolic testing, and we'll have an Ask the Pharmacist booth. Plan to come and visit many of the booths, gaining knowledge from the variety of health screenings and abundant resources available. Pick up your Activity Passport at the Welcome booth when you arrive, then bring it back after you participate in at least 20 activities to be entered into the prize drawing. We'll be giving away two Fitbit Charge 2 activity trackers to help inspire a healthier you! 

*This Walk-In Clinic offers vaccines covering four common flu strains and appropriate for adults and children age 3 and up. It will also have preservative-free vaccines for pregnant women. Please park in the Enloe Parking Structure at W. 6th & Magnolia avenues. This free flu clinic has a public bus stop, and designated handicap parking will be available onsite. Please visit www.enloe.org/flu for more information about this clinic as well as additional locations for no-cost preservative-free vaccine appropriate for pregnant women

**Accepting over-the-counter and prescription drugs in capsule and tablet form, as well as liquid medications. NO needles, ointments, intravenous solutions. Medications should be removed from original containers and placed in plastic baggies for disposal. 

Tuesday, November 14 | Caring for the Caregiver

6 p.m. to at 8 p.m.; doors open at 5:30 p.m. | Enloe Conference Center, 1528 Esplanade, Chico

Caregivers provide important physical, practical and emotional support. However, they can face challenges when they take on this role. If you’re caring for a loved one, join us for an evening of resources and support to help guide you. Our panel discussion will feature medical professionals from various disciplines,  including representatives from the Alzheimer’s Association, the Brain Injury Coalition, as well as Enloe's HomeCare, Hospice, and Palliative Care teams. While you're there, visit our informational booths and ask any questions you may have. Light refreshments will be on hand. This event is free and open to the public. Please RSVP online to save your space.

Saturday, December 2 | Walk With a Doc

NEW TIME! 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. | Chico Mall

Join us at Chico Mall for the last Walk with a Doc of 2017! Walks take place the first Saturday of each month. Each walk begins with a brief inspirational talk. All ages and abilities are welcome! Walk regularly throughout the month and track your time on a walking log to watch your progress.

Back in Action

This free class provides education before your spine surgery and is an opportunity to enhance your hospital experience. Our goal is to help you and your caregiver become active participants in your health care, and aid you in a speedy recovery. We will discuss the surgical process and how to participate in your recovery. Members of your care team will be available to answer your questions. You can also meet other patients who are preparing for the same type of surgery. Family members or friends are encouraged to attend class with you. These sessions are held the first and third Tuesday of every month from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Enloe Rehabilitation Center Conference Room, 340 W. East Ave., Chico. See the 2017 class schedule. Registration is recommended. Please contact your surgeon's office for registration.

Bariatric Pre-Surgical Education

This class is designed to help patients prepare for their bariatric surgery at Enloe Medical Center. It provides a better idea of what to expect during the hospital visit and how to participate in the recovery process. Spouses, relatives and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend. Bariatric Post-Surgical Education

This two-hour class is offered starting at about one month after surgery. Participants get an opportunity to review important information and follow-up on special guidelines as their diet and other needs change. The class is held on two Thursdays each month. Cancer Center - New Patient Orientation

All newly diagnosed cancer patients and their caregivers are encouraged to attend. Hematology patients are also invited. Find out more about how to get the most out of your doctor’s visits, communicating with others about your diagnosis, managing financial and legal issues, dealing with stress related to diagnosis, and resources available to support you during and after treatment. Takes place Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to noon. Register at the reception area of your doctor’s office at the Cancer Center or by calling 332-3900. Location: Cancer Center Library, 265 Cohasset Road, Suite 120, Chico.

Chemotherapy Education

Being informed can help reduce stress and improve your experience! A brief introduction to chemotherapy and an opportunity to ask questions of an oncology nurse will be offered to those patients scheduled to begin chemotherapy. Caregivers also encouraged to attend.Takes place Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Register at the reception area of your doctor’s office at the Cancer Center or by calling 332-3900. Location: Cancer Center Library, 265 Cohasset Road, Suite 120, Chico.

♥ Cardiac Rehabilitation

Educational and exercise-conditioning classes for people with heart problems. The program is tailored to help each person improve their health, increase their strength and endurance, and to feel better. Sessions are directed by a Registered Nurse and an Exercise Physiologist. CPR Classes

Diabetes Services & Education

  • Diabetes Education Services: Through self-management training, participants gain knowledge and self-care skills necessary to manage their condition effectively. Physician-referral required. (530) 332-6840
  • Sweet Success Program: Education and guidelines for women with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes who are pregnant and those with gestational diabetes. (530) 332-6840
  • Pre-Diabetes Class: This two-hour class is designed for ALL adults, whether you think you have diabetes or not. In fact, nearly a third of adults living with diabetes don’t even know they have it! During the class, participants will learn from health care professionals how to take charge of their health and lower their risk for diabetes with exercise and healthy eating. We’ll also discuss goal setting and available resources, as well as what your numbers really mean. $10 per person. This class takes place quarterly at the Enloe Outpatient Center, 888 Lakeside Village Commons, Building C, Classroom A, Chico. (530) 332-6840.

  • Enloe Cardiac Rehabilitation: Education and exercise-conditioning classes for people with heart problems. Healthy Steps: The Lebed Method

Gentle therapeutic exercise to help regain range of motion, increase flexibility, reduce swelling from lymphedema, decrease depression, and promote positive self-image and joy! This class is gentle with easy movement, and can be done sitting or standing - and it’s fun! It's held Mondays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Fountain Medical Conference Room at the Fountain Medical Plaza, 251 Cohasset Road, Chico. Free with $10 materials fee. Pre-registration required. Call Mary Jo at (530) 228-4753 or David at (530) 332-3877. There will not be a Monday classes on Feb. 20 or March 13.

Infertility Support Group

If you are in need of comfort, understanding, and support regarding infertility, we welcome you to come discover you are not alone in the journey. This support group is designed to help create a safe sense of community. It meets on the first Thursday of every month from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Enloe Conference Center, 1528 Esplanade, and often includes a guest speaker. Joint Effort

This one-hour class helps patients prepare for total joint replacement surgery. It provides a better idea of what to expect during the hospital visit and how to participate in the recovery process. You'll get an opportunity to ask questions of medical professionals and meet others who will be having the same surgery. Spouse, relatives or friends are welcome and encouraged to attend class. These gatherings are held weekly on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Fountain Medical Conference Room at the Fountain Medical Conference Room at the Fountain Medical Plaza, 251 Cohasset Road, Chico. See the 2017 class schedule. Please contact your orthopedic surgeon's office for registration.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Clinic

An eight-week series, offered four times a year, and designed to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain and the symptoms of many other stress-related disorders. MBSR is meant to complement not substitute medical treatments you may be receiving. Employee Assistance Program (EAP) benefits and health insurance coverage may apply. See the class schedule on the MBSR website. The cost is $395, which includes registration, textbook, workbook, audio recordings and a follow-up program. Classes are led by Steve Flowers, M.S., MFT. Physicians, nurses, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, and licensed clinical social workers may report 24 hours of Continuing Education for participating in this program (Category 1 Credit toward the California Medical Association in Continuing Medical Education). Pregnancy & Parenting Classes: Growing Healthy Babies and Families

Getting ready for a new baby and parenting are exciting and important times. Enloe Medical Center wants to help you and your family prepare. Weekly Weight-Loss Surgery Informational Seminars

Free seminars led by bariatric surgeons Deron Ludwig, M.D., and Erik Simchuk, M.D., with an intro by Enloe bariatric nurses. These sessions cover topics related to weight-loss surgery, the disease of morbid obesity, health issues associated with obesity and surgical options. Seminars are held weekly on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Meetings take place at the Fountain Medical Conference Room, 251 Cohasset Road, Chico. For more information, call (530) 332-5122.
