A patient-centered approach to health care
Enloe Medical Center is committed to providing a nurturing environment where patients are surrounded by caring staff and supported by opportunities and resources that promote healing of the body, mind and spirit. Enloe's Board of Trustees and Administration chose to pursue the Planetree affiliation, finding it an exceptional approach to the delivery of care with technology, medicine and complementary healing. As an affiliate of the Planetree program, Enloe has begun to implement initiatives that address some of the components of Planetree and is making strides in identifying, developing, and implementing patient-centered care in a healing environment.
What is Planetree?
Planetree is a non-profit organization that connects hospitals with tools and ideas for demystifying and personalizing the health care experience for patients and families. Planetree provides the ideas and resources to make a difference in hospitals and offers opportunities to share concepts with other hospitals. The patient-centered care approach encourages:
- interaction at all levels;
- the support of family and friends;
- education and access to information;
- the role of nutrition, arts and spirituality;
- the opportunity for expanded choices of treatment;
- and extending the boundaries of health care into our communities to promote preventive health and wellness.
The organization takes its name from the planetree, or sycamore, under which Hippocrates taught his medical students.
To serve as a catalyst in the development and implementation of new models of health care which focus on healing and nurturing body, mind and spirit. These models integrate human caring with the best of scientific medicine and complementary healing traditions.
The Planetree Model
Since its founding in 1978 as a non-profit organization, Planetree has continued to be a pioneer in personalizing and demystifying the health care experience for patients and their families. Founded by a patient, the Planetree Model is committed to enhancing health care from the patient's perspective. It empowers patients and families through information and education, and encourages “healing partnerships” with caregivers to support active participation. Through organizational transformation, the Planetree Model assists hospitals in the creation of healing environments in which patients can be active participants and caregivers are enabled to thrive.
Planetree has developed 10 components for acute care hospitals. Planetree-affiliated hospitals like Enloe Medical Center can choose to focus on any or all of these components.
