Butte County health care providers team up
to identify, meet local needs

Survey, focus groups are under way to determine key areas of need

UPDATE: June 10, 2013 - THE COMMUNITY NEEDS SURVEY IS NOW CLOSED. We are processing the results to identify the areas of greatest need. Then we will work with our partners to develop a three-year plan to address the identified needs. Thank you to the 1,300 community members who participated in the survey.

CHICO, Calif., MAY 3, 2013 –Three area hospitals – Biggs-Gridley Memorial Hospital, Enloe Medical Center and Feather River Hospital – and the Butte County Public Health Department have partnered to complete a county-wide community health needs assessment to identify and address unmet health care needs. As part of this assessment, the partners have developed an anonymous community-wide survey that they are encouraging Butte County residents to complete by Sunday, June 9.

The survey asks about a range of health issues, including nutrition and exercise habits, general health and insurance information, and it asks residents to identify the most pressing issues facing Butte County families. The survey is available on each participating hospital’s website, on the Public Health website or can be made available in print form, in English and Spanish, by contacting any of the following representatives:

Under the Affordable Care Act, hospitals throughout the country are now required to conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment every three years and to develop a community benefits plan in response to the findings.

In addition to developing the survey, the partners will host a series of focus groups and community events asking for direct feedback from others involved in the care of Butte County residents. “We know instinctively what some of the big needs are, but our goal is to open a dialogue beyond just our own hospitals and get a better look at what others see as the areas of need,” said Deanna Reed, Enloe Medical Center’s Community Outreach Coordinator.

Feedback from the anonymous survey, along with information gathered through focus groups and publicly available data, will help the hospitals identify and prioritize the current health needs of Butte County residents. With that information, they will each develop a three-year plan using programs and services offered by the hospitals, as well as resources available through local agencies, to help address identified needs.
