Dr. David Potter honored with 2012 Physician
Legacy Award

CHICO, Calif., DEC. 19, 2012 – Each year, the Enloe Physician Legacy Award recognizes a member of the Enloe Medical Staff for exceptional service, leadership and performance in medicine and the community. The honoree for 2012 is hematologist/oncologist David Potter, MD, who is a member of the Enloe Hematology Oncology physician group at the Enloe Regional Cancer Center. Dr. Potter was honored on Dec. 18 at a General Medical Staff Meeting of physicians.


Comments on the public nominations included: “He has provided compassionate, professional care to cancer patients for over 25 years. He is very approachable and is eager to educate the nursing staff. Dr. Potter was Planetree ready before there was a Planetree.” “He is the kind of physician we wish we could clone. He has created a legacy of expert care with compassionate delivery.” “Dr. Potter is the ‘rock’ of the Cancer Center. He has been the stabilizing force providing a calm, professional, friendly, compassionate demeanor to patients and staff. He’s a favorite speaker at the yearly Oncology Symposium.”


Dr. Potter has been a member of the Enloe Medical Staff since 1981. In addition to treating cancer and hematology patients, Dr. Potter has served as the Medical Director of Enloe Hospice since 2010. Other leadership roles have included serving as Enloe’s Chief of Staff (1995-1997) and as an Enloe Board of Trustee (1997-2001). His professional activities date back to the 1980s and have included serving as a member of the Enloe Medical Staff’s Executive Committee (1988-1999); on the Board of Directors of Hospice of North Valley (1982-1983, 1984-1988) and Hospice of the Ridge (1984-1988); and as Chairman of the Joint Cancer Committee (1981-1983) and the Institutional Review Board (1984-2006) at both Enloe and Chico Community Hospital. Dr. Potter has also served as the principal and sub-investigator for multiple clinical research trials and has published research articles in medical journals.  

Dr. Potter is board certified in Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine. He completed a fellowship and residency at UCLA Medical Center and received his medical degree at UCSF School of Medicine.

The selection process includes a review of nominations made by doctors on the Enloe Medical Staff as well as employees, volunteers and community members. The Medical Executive Committee – composed of physicians who have been elected by their peers to lead Enloe’s Medical Staff – makes the final decision and presents the award. Criteria includes an Enloe physician whose leadership at the hospital and in the community both locally and at large has changed our world for the better; who has been a member of the medical staff for more than one year; and who has excellent clinical knowledge and skill.
