Dr. Eugene Cleek honored as 2010 Physician Legacy Award recipient
CHICO, Calif., Dec. 15, 2010 – Eugene Cleek, MD, has been selected by the Medical Executive Committee at Enloe Medical Center to receive the 2010 Enloe Physician Legacy Award. The award recognizes members of the Enloe Medical Staff for exceptional service, leadership and performance in medicine and the community. The Medical Executive Committee is composed of physicians who have been elected by their peers to lead the Medical Staff at Enloe Medical Center.
Dr. Cleek performs trauma surgery, general surgery and vascular surgery at Enloe Medical Center and has served as medical director of the Enloe Trauma Program since 2007. He has been a member of the Enloe Medical Staff since 1981, leaving for four years to do medical missionary work in Africa.
Dr. Cleek has participated in numerous medical missions abroad. In his longest mission, from 2003 through 2007 through the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons, Dr. Cleek trained surgeons and met the local surgical needs. Five Africans graduated from the four-year surgical residency and all work across the African continent. Dr. Cleek also served as a military surgeon during the Gulf War.
Dr. Cleek was born and raised in Orland, Calif. He has been married 34 years to Laurel, and they have five children.

Dr. Cleek received his medical degree at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara and completed his residency and fellowship at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta. He is certified through the American Board of Surgery.
Past recipients of the Physician Legacy Award are Joseph Matthews, MD; Terrance Fraters, MD; Joseph Chiapella, MD; Jimmy Roberts, MD; Walter Mazen, Sr., MD; James Wood, MD; and Donald Heithecker, MD. The selection process includes a review of nominations made by Medical Staff, employees, volunteers and community members. The Medical Executive Committee makes the final decision and presents the award. Criteria includes an Enloe physician whose leadership at the hospital and in the community both locally and at large has changed our world for the better; who has been a member of the medical staff for more than one year; and who has excellent clinical knowledge and skill.
