Enloe welcomes oncology doctor William Bonis
CHICO, Calif., NOV. 5, 2010 – Enloe Medical Center is pleased to announce the arrival of Oncologist/Hematologist William Bonis, MD, who has joined the group of physicians practicing in the Enloe Regional Cancer Center. Educated in Europe as well as the United States, Dr. Bonis (pronounced like “bonus”) specializes in diagnosing and treating a wide range of cancers and blood disorders.
A California native in private practice since 2000, Dr. Bonis comes to Chico from Paso Robles, where he treated patients at Oncology/Hematology Associates of the Central Coast as well as four hospitals in the San Luis Obispo area. The previous nine years, he worked at the Eureka-based practice Eureka Internal Medicine.
Dr. Bonis says he chose Chico because he sought a “hospital-based practice” in a smaller California city than his native Long Beach. Of the Enloe Regional Cancer Center, he says, “I came to a facility that’s very professional, where there’s a great need, and where there’s a high level of job satisfaction and the staff wants to work as a team. I’m very grateful to be here.
“I had a lengthy vetting process,” he adds. “Chico beat out major cities, which is a good thing. Coming from a big city in Southern California, I’ve learned the value of a smaller community. This is where you grow roots.” Dr. Bonis is married, with three children.
After graduating from California State University-Long Beach with a bachelor’s degree in marine biology, Dr. Bonis studied in Hungary, his familial homeland. He got accepted to Semmelweis University, a 300-year-old medical school in Budapest, where he received his medical degree in 1990.
He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, an affiliate of UCLA, and his fellowship in Oncology/Hematology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance.
Dr. Bonis is board-certified and recertified in Internal Medicine, with subspecialty certifications in hematology and medical oncology. His experience includes treating cancers of the lung, breast, colon, ovaries and prostate; hematological malignancies such as Myeloma and non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma; benign blood disorders such as Myelodysplasia, and coagulation disorders.
Dr. Bonis practices at Chico Hematology Oncology Medical Associates, along with Dr. John Howard, Dr. David Potter and Dr. Nicole Whitlatch. The office is located inside the Enloe Regional Cancer Center at 265 Cohasset Road in Chico.
“Medicine is changing; as physicians, we need to change with the times as well,” Dr. Bonis says. “I believe the future of medicine is going to evolve into larger, hospital-based practices where patients still will have a selection of physicians and top-notch care. Working out of a hospital facility is a plus for me and for patients.”
Clinical services at the Enloe Regional Cancer Center include radiation oncology; infusion therapy, at a clinic overlooking the beautiful Healing Garden; breast care; clinical trials; oncology tumor rounds; a cancer registry; a lymphedema program, and acupuncture. Patients and their families receive support and education through case management, a library, cancer care shop, and many support programs, including healing arts projects and programs.
