Enloe welcomes home Obstetrician/Gynecologist Lindsey Cafferata

CHICO, Calif., Aug. 18, 2010 – Enloe Medical Center is pleased to announce the arrival of Lindsey Cafferata, MD, the new obstetrician/gynecologist in her hometown, Chico. She joins the Enloe Medical Staff and practices down the street from the hospital at OB/GYN Associates of Chico.

“Returning home was always my plan,” says Dr. Cafferata, who completed the Kaiser Permanente Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program in Oakland. Though she is interested in international medicine, “functionally fluent” in Spanish and has gone on multiple medical missions, she adds, “I’m not going anywhere — permanently. I love to travel, so I’ll be here, there and everywhere; but this is home.”

Dr. Cafferata was born at Enloe, where her father, Michael Cafferata, works as an Emergency Room nurse. A graduate of Chico High, she attended Chico State University on scholarship from the College of Natural Sciences, receiving her bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry. She also achieved certification as an Emergency Medical Technician at Butte College.

It was during medical school, Dr. Cafferata says, that she decided to become an OB/GYN physician. She attended Chicago Medical School at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. En route to earning her doctorate of medicine, she participated in an externship program at the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians as well as a two-month rotation in a rural hospital in Kenya.

Dr. Cafferata also spent a month in Ecuador during her OB/GYN residency. Just this February, she went on a medical mission to the Philippines. For five days, along with her father in the community of Daet, she performed gynecological operations and caesarian sections. “It was exhausting, but it was amazing,” she says. During that trip, for the first time, a family named their newborn daughter in her honor.

“I’ve delivered close to 1,000 babies,” she adds, “and finally got a Lindsey!”

Deciding to practice in Chico “kind of made sense,” Dr. Cafferata explains. “There’s a need in the community for an OB/GYN, for a female OB/GYN.” She also is looking forward to the Nettleton Mother & Baby Care Center on the fourth floor of Enloe’s new hospital tower, scheduled to open next year. “It’s amazing — it’s as good as you get,” she says. “There are whirlpool baths in every [delivery] room, and every room is private. It’s nice to have a quiet, private, personal delivery.”

OB/GYN Associates of Chico is located at 1665 Esplanade. The practice also includes Steven Lazaro, MD, and Walter Mazen Jr., MD, along with nurse practitioners Karen Aronson and Camille Panighetti.
