Enloe welcomes gastroenterologist
Shaheen Rasheed

CHICO, Calif., SEPT. 23, 2010 – Enloe Medical Center is pleased to announce the arrival of gastroenterologist Shaheen Rasheed, MD, who has joined the Enloe Medical Staff and the Chico-based physician practice Digestive Disease Associates. Dr. Rasheed, the second GI physician to come from New York to Chico in recent months, specializes in advanced endoscopic procedures to treat gastroenterological diseases.

His expertise includes endoscopic ultrasound, ERCP and enteral stenting. (Please see below for explanations of these procedures.)

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Rasheed completed his residency (internal medicine), chief residency and fellowship (gastroenterology) at the Stony Brook Medical Center in New York. He received his medical degree from Flinders University of South Australia.

Dr. Rasheed grew up in Australia and Southeast Asia. Family in the northeastern United States drew him to Stony Brook. Dr. Rasheed said he decided to practice in Chico because he likes the topography, the community and the professional prospects.

“I always wanted to be part of a regional medical center,” Dr. Rasheed explains. “When I was here [visiting], I thought there was a need for GI physicians, and Enloe provides an optimal umbrella for us to help the community. We serve a big population, and we can serve them well with our expertise.”

Dr. Rasheed performs endoscopies at Enloe Medical Center. He sees patients in his office at 251 Cohasset Road, Suite 300. Also practicing with Digestive Disease Associates are Stephen F. Pearce, MD; Richard A. Zak, MD; and Uzma Abbasi, MD, who came to Chico in July.

About the procedures:  Endoscopic sonography is a new approach to visualizing upper gastrointestinal lesions. The sonographic device makes it possible to obtain high-resolution images of mucosal and mural lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as of adjacent masses. This technique has substantially improved preoperative staging of esophageal and gastric cancers. In addition, high-resolution sonographs of the pancreas can be obtained. ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) is a minimally invasive procedure, like ultrasonography, that enables the physician to diagnose problems in the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas. Enteral stenting is a procedure for opening obstructed portions of the colon, proximal small intestine and esophagus.
