Enloe welcomes Dr. Whitlatch to the Enloe Regional Cancer Center

CHICO, Calif., March 9, 2010 – Enloe Medical Center is proud to announce the arrival of Oncologist/Hematologist Nicole L. Whitlatch, MD, who has joined the Enloe Medical Staff and the physicians’ group in the Enloe Regional Cancer Center. Fresh off the faculty at Duke University, Dr. Whitlatch specializes in the treatment of breast cancer and blood-clotting disorders. Her physician office number is (530) 893-2323.

“She has a great background and is going to treat a lot of people in need,” says Dr. John Howard, her colleague at Chico Hematology Oncology Medical Associates. “It’s especially good for me to me to have a fellow hematologist to run cases by. It’s remarkably uplifting to have that camaraderie.”

Dr. Whitlatch served as an assistant professor of medicine in the Medical Oncology Division after completing her residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. She received her medical doctorate from Boston University, where she also earned a master’s degree in physiology.

Dr. Whitlatch’s research includes the study of Heparin-induced Thrombocytopenia, a condition in which patients have an adverse reaction to the blood-thinning medication Heparin and develop blood clots. Her work, including research with renowned hematologist Dr. Thomas L. Ortel, has been published in six medical journals.

While she has a broad background, Dr. Whitlatch has focused her attention on two specific areas: breast cancer and clotting disorders. She explains, “Clotting disorders are pretty complicated and interesting, but these disorders are also treatable — you can improve patient outcomes. Breast cancer has such an impact on women’s lives, and the treatments we have are improving and expanding.”

A native of Boston, Dr. Whitlatch came to Chico with her husband, Dr. Lyman William (Bill) Whitlatch, a neurosurgeon from Duke who grew up in California. She says, “I hope to be here a long time and have the rest of my practicing years be in Chico. We have a lot of resources here. The Cancer Center is quite wonderful.”

The Enloe Regional Cancer Center offers radiation oncology and infusion therapy treatments and houses oncologist offices as well as its own pharmacy and a peaceful garden. Patients and their families receive support and education at the center through the library, cancer care shop, and many support programs, including healing arts projects and programs. The Cancer Center offers a weekly private paid clinic with local licensed acupuncturists for the treatment of general conditions, as well as a weekly low-cost group clinic for the treatment of the side effects of cancer treatment. Some cancer patients at the medical center also receive acupuncture. For more about the Enloe Regional Cancer Center, visit www.enloe.org/cancer.
