Enloe Medical Center, City of Chico celebrate Arbor Day
CHICO, Calif., March 8, 2010 – Enloe Medical Center and the City of Chico are partnering to celebrate Arbor Day Tuesday, March 9 at 11 a.m. with the planting of two ash trees by Prestige Landscape Services on West Fifth Avenue near the corner of Magnolia Avenue. The City will also plant five ginkgos and two Autumn Blaze maples on West Sixth and Arcadian Avenues on City street property as part of the Arbor Day activities.
Among those in attendance at the Arbor Day celebration at West Fifth Avenue will be Ann Schwab, the mayor of Chico; Denice Britton, the city’s urban forest manager; and Matthews Jackson, chair of Enloe’s Board of Trustees. The ash trees will replace two trees removed due to hazard.
Many more street trees are to be planted around Enloe, including at the medical center’s forthcoming park. This is part of ongoing landscaping of the Enloe Century Project, Enloe’s expansion. In 2008, several magnolia trees were planted along Enloe’s new parking structure, which was the first phase of the expansion.
Beautiful landscaping enhances a healing environment, something that Enloe has been working to create at the medical center, both inside and outside, as part of our Planetree approach to health care. Planetree is an internationally recognized not-for-profit organization that connects hospitals with tools and ideas for demystifying and personalizing the health care experience for patients.
Arbor Day was first celebrated in 1872 in Nebraska. Journalist and politician Julius Sterling Morton is credited for starting Arbor Day after he moved to Nebraska from Michigan and planted shade trees and orchards as windbreaks on his own land. He suggested that a day be dedicated to tree planting and increasing the public’s awareness of the value of trees. It is celebrated on different dates around the country to meet optimal conditions for planting.
