Joseph Chiapella, MD, receives Enloe’s Physician Legacy Award

CHICO, Calif., Dec. 21, 2007 – Joseph Chiapella, MD, has been selected by the Medical Staff at Enloe Medical Center to receive the 2007 Enloe Physician Legacy Award. The award recognizes members of the Enloe Medical Staff for exceptional service, leadership and performance in medicine and the community.

Dr. Chiapella, who joined Enloe in April 1979, is board certified in Internal Medicine with a specialty in Rheumatology. He is Medical Director of Enloe’s Hospitalist Program, which he helped to establish in 1995, and Director of Enloe’s Los Molinos Family Health Clinic.

Hospitalists are physicians who provide care to hospitalized patients. At Enloe, they serve patients at the acute care hospital, the Rehabilitation Center and Enloe Behavioral Health. Hospitalists manage and coordinate inpatient care for the majority of Chico’s primary care and subspecialty physicians and also care for hospitalized patients who do not have personal physicians.

“Dr. Chiapella always makes decisions that are in the best interest of his patients, Enloe Medical Center and his colleagues," said Terrence Hawkins, DO, who is also a hospitalist at Enloe.

Dr. Chiapella graduated from Tulane University’s School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1971. After a residency in internal medicine, he completed a fellowship in rheumatology at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta in 1974. Dr. Chiapella’s late father and grandfather were also physicians in Chico.

The Medical Executive Committee presents the annual award. Past recipients of the annual Physician Legacy Award were Jimmy Roberts, MD; Walter Mazen, Sr., M.D.; James Wood, M.D.; and Donald Heithecker, M.D.

The Physician Legacy Award selection process includes a review of nominations made by Enloe physicians, administrators, employees, volunteers and patients. The Medical Executive Staff makes the final decision. Criteria includes an Enloe physician whose leadership at the hospital and in the community both locally and at large has changed our world for the better; who has been a member of the medical staff for more than one year; and who has excellent clinical knowledge and skill.
