Dr. Jimmy Roberts receives
Enloe’s Physician Legacy Award

CHICO, Calif., Dec. 26, 2006 – Local Nephrologist Jimmy Roberts, M.D., has been selected by the medical staff at Enloe Medical Center to receive the 2006 Enloe Physician Legacy Award. The award recognizes members of the Enloe Medical Staff for exceptional service, leadership and performance in medicine and the community.

Dr. Roberts, a member of Enloe’s Medical Staff, is a nephrologist, an internal medicine physician dealing with the function and disease of the kidney. His notable work includes directing the immunology lab at Chicago’s Rush Presbyterian hospital, where he produced a comprehensive approach in glomerular diseases, which attack the tiny units within the kidney where blood is cleaned. He’s also done significant work around dialysis, formulating guidelines for The National Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative. At Enloe, his work included better identification tracking of renal dysfunction, which has helped physicians and staff to better care and manage very sick patients.

In a speech given at the award ceremony, Jose Sibal, M.D., who is in practice with Dr. Roberts, said, "Everybody knows Jimmy Roberts has built a lifetime monument of research achievements, publications and guideline practices. The renal community in which he is a part of, as well as I am, adopted these guidelines and standards to ensure quality outcomes for patients with chronic renal failure." Dr. Sibal added: "Dr. Jimmy Roberts pushed quality outcomes for our patients that brought recognition to our dialysis units. And most of all, he is an advocate of quality care for our department and here at Enloe."

Daniel Thomas, M.D., Enloe Chief of Staff, said: "He's an exceptional scholar and physician who always puts his patients first. He advocates for his patients. He brought technological innovations to Chico. He's a national figure in the field of protocols for dialysis."

The Medical Executive Committee, which presents the annual award, has changed the date of the awards to December, from March, to align with its cycle, which changes over every Jan. 1. The late Walter Mazen, Sr., M.D., was awarded with the Physician Legacy Award in the Spring of 2006. The first recipient for the award, introduced in 2004, was Donald Heithecker, M.D., an ear, nose and throat specialist. The 2005 recipient was Pediatrician James Wood, M.D.

The Physician Legacy Award selection process includes a review of nominations made by Enloe physicians, administrators, employees, volunteers and patients. The Medical Executive Staff makes the final decision. Criteria includes an Enloe physician whose leadership at the hospital and in the community both locally and at large has changed our world for the better; who has been a member of the medical staff for more than one year; and who has excellent clinical knowledge and skill.
